There are many varieties of Reiki courses today and therefore the number of levels and what is taught vary with each one. Traditionally, the structure of the Usui system was taught in three levels. It has been said that the founder, Mikao Usui, taught these levels spaced out over time, giving the student the opportunity to evolve with dedicated practice. The time in between levels is necessary to allow the student to integrate the energies and teachings they have received. Reiki is an energetic practice, a spiritual practice, and needs to be experienced by the students, in their own way, in their own time.
The three levels taught are Shoden, Okuden and Shinpiden in Japanese. You will often see four levels taught in the West, level 1, level 2, master-practitioner and master-teacher. Level 3 is divided into two parts, master-practitioner and master-teacher. This gives the student the option to deepen their Reiki practice, connecting with the master symbol, without learning how to pass on the teachings of the system of Reiki. Some prefer this, as they do not feel called to teach this practice.
Shoden means “first teachings.” It is geared towards self-healing and gaining an inner understanding of energy. It is the initiation to the student’s Reiki journey. They learn the foundations of the system and how to connect to their inner self. A safe space for release of obstructing energy as well as for gaining confidence in one’s natural ability to heal, will be provided.
Okuden means “inner teachings.” This level strengthens the student’s connection to energy, increasing their sensitivity. Three mantras and symbols will be given to aid in this. This level will assist in the student’s progression along their spiritual path and aid them in offering Reiki to others professionally.
Shinpiden means “mystery teachings.” As mentioned before, this level can be split into two parts. The first part of this level focuses on empowering the student as a whole and further strengthens the student’s connection to energy and their intuition. One will receive the fourth mantra and symbol, which promotes the awakening of the student to Self-mastery. The second part of this level focuses on the ability to teach the traditional system of Reiki. It also enhances one’s connection to the system, reinforcing the student’s confidence in themself and the practice.
